Angler Catches 21lb Carp on River Yare Using Ultra-Light Tackle (2026)

The world of angling is a fascinating one, and sometimes, it takes an unexpected twist to make a story truly memorable. Gareth Daniels, a 33-year-old factory worker from North Walsham, has achieved a remarkable feat that has caught the attention of fishing enthusiasts and the media alike. Daniels, an avid angler since the age of seven, has set a new personal record by catching a 21lb 8oz carp on the River Yare in Whitlingham, near Norwich.

What makes this story even more intriguing is the method he employed. Daniels chose to fish from an anchored paddleboard, a technique that might seem unconventional but has proven to be highly effective. His unique approach has not only yielded a record-breaking catch but also sparked curiosity and amusement among passers-by on the Broads.

Daniels' journey to this achievement began with a simple mistake. He and his dad set out for an early-morning fishing trip, but upon arriving in Norwich, he realized he had forgotten the essential maggots. This oversight led them to return to North Walsham, which, ironically, put him on the water at the perfect time to catch the carp.

"It's quite a funny story," Daniels said with a laugh. "We left at about 3.20 am for first light and got to Norwich. Then I realized I had forgotten the maggots, and we had to go all the way back to North Walsham. If I had remembered them, I probably wouldn't have been there at the right time to catch it. I've been on lakes and never caught anything this big before."

Daniels' anchored paddleboard fishing technique often attracts attention, with people sneaking photos of him. However, he remains steadfast in his belief that this method is effective. During the winter, when the water gets colder, he switches to fishing from the riverbanks, but he still relishes the opportunity to get out on the water as much as possible.

The carp, in perfect condition, was returned unharmed to its natural habitat. Daniels' achievement highlights the unpredictability and excitement that can arise from angling. It also serves as a testament to the importance of adaptability and embracing unconventional methods, as sometimes, a simple mistake can lead to a remarkable personal record.

In my opinion, this story is a fascinating blend of personal achievement, unconventional methods, and the unpredictable nature of angling. It reminds us that sometimes, the most memorable moments in our hobbies come from embracing the unexpected and stepping out of our comfort zones.
