Which Top Free-Agent Hitter Would Best Fit the Dodgers?
The Dodgers, aiming for a third consecutive World Series title, might not be done yet. With a potential eye on bolstering their lineup, Los Angeles has been linked to three top free-agent hitters: Kyle Tucker, Cody Bellinger, and Bo Bichette. Each brings unique strengths and could fit into the Dodgers' lineup in 2026 and beyond, but which one is the best match?
Kyle Tucker
Tucker, a left-handed hitter, would address the Dodgers' corner outfield weakness. In 2025, Michael Conforto struggled in left, and Teoscar Hernández had defensive issues in right. Tucker, a better hitter and fielder, would be a significant upgrade. He also brings speed, having stolen 25 bases three times in his career, adding another dimension to the Dodgers' lineup.
Tucker's addition would create a balanced lefty-righty lineup. He pairs well with lefties like Shohei Ohtani, Freddie Freeman, and Max Muncy, while Hernández, Mookie Betts, and Will Smith are right-handed. With only Muncy as a free agent after 2026, Tucker, if signed to a multiyear deal, would be part of a core built for long-term success.
However, Tucker's signing might push Hernández back to left, where he struggled in 2024. Tucker's league-average defense would be an improvement, but he's a patient hitter with power, hitting 22+ home runs in each of the past five seasons, making him a valuable asset.
Cody Bellinger
Bellinger, a versatile defender, would also address the corner outfield need. He has experience at all three outfield spots and at first base, making him a multipositional asset. Bellinger's .272/.334/.480 slash line with 29 homers and 13 steals in 2025, coupled with a career-low strikeout rate, earned him down-ballot MVP votes.
His +9 Fielding Run Value and 5.1 bWAR were his highest since winning the 2019 NL MVP with the Dodgers. Bellinger could replace Conforto in left or Andy Pages in center, with his versatility allowing him to spell other players. While he lacks Tucker's speed, he's a valuable left-handed bat behind Ohtani and Freeman.
Bo Bichette
Bichette, one of the youngest free agents, could be a long-term core member for the Dodgers. With Betts entrenched at shortstop, Bichette could move to second base, a position where the Dodgers struggled in 2025. His .294 career average and OPS above .800 in all but one season make him a significant upgrade.
Bichette's contact skills and power-hitting ability could make him a key middle-of-the-order bat, potentially replacing Betts if his 2025 struggles continue. While he's primarily a leadoff hitter, his versatility and skills make him a strong candidate to fit into the Dodgers' lineup.
