A sense of relief washes over Manchester Airport as the first flight from Dubai lands, bringing passengers home amidst a turbulent Middle Eastern conflict.
'A Welcome Return'
The Emirates flight, originally scheduled for 12:51 GMT, touched down 96 minutes late, but the wait was worth it for the approximately 200 passengers on board.
"It's brilliant to be home," exclaimed Emily Bexan, who had been holidaying with her mum, Julie. The pair, from Nantwich, Cheshire, had originally planned to fly back on Saturday but were fortunate to secure a spot on this flight.
Julie shared, "We feel very lucky to be back. It was a confusing situation, but we're just glad to be safe."
Solidarity in Dubai
Emily described the atmosphere in Dubai as one of unity and support. "Everyone is sticking together out there," she said, highlighting the resilience of the people amidst the conflict.
Her mum added, "We're home, and that's all that matters. We hope everyone else makes it back safely too."
A Shocking Turn of Events
Roy Woodhead, a fellow passenger from Sheffield, expressed his surprise at the conflict's sudden onset. "It came out of the blue," he said. Woodhead, who was returning from Singapore via Dubai, faced challenges getting on a flight due to ticketing issues.
"There was a lot of chaos," he explained. "But the people in Dubai were fantastic."
A Nervous Journey
Satwinder Samra, also from Sheffield, waited anxiously at the arrivals gate for his wife, Emma England, who had been on a business trip to Dubai. "I'm overjoyed she made it back safely," Satwinder shared.
Saketh Darehamulla, who had been scheduled to fly back to the UK from Mumbai, also faced travel disruptions due to the conflict. He eventually flew to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and from there, made his way back to Manchester.
"It was a nerve-wracking experience," Saketh admitted. "I'm just grateful to be home."
A Matter of Luck
Alison, a Manchester resident, echoed the sentiment of relief as she waited for her family members to return. "It's been worrying," she said. "They were frightened, and just wanted to get out."
Alison attributed their successful return to "a lot of good luck." She explained, "They booked multiple flights as soon as they became available. It was luck, pure and simple."
Limited Flights, Big Impact
The Emirates flight operated at less than half of its capacity, highlighting the impact of the conflict on travel in the region. Emirates has suspended all scheduled flights to and from Dubai until March 4th due to airspace closures.
In a statement, the airline said, "We are accommodating customers with earlier bookings as a priority on these limited flights."
