Get ready for a sports legend's journey! Dustin Pedroia, a Woodland native, is about to join the prestigious Sacramento Sports Hall of Fame, but there's more to this story than meets the eye.
Pedroia, a true local hero, will be inducted alongside four other remarkable Sacramento athletes, including Jim Breech, Mike Burton, Stan Hack, and Ricky Jordan. The 10th annual induction ceremony, set for February 5th at the Golden 1 Center, promises to be a memorable event.
"Being inducted into the Sacramento Sports Hall of Fame is an incredible honor," Pedroia shared. "Growing up in Woodland, I was inspired by the toughness and work ethic of local athletes. These values shaped my career and my life. I'm excited for this special occasion."
Pedroia's journey began at Woodland High School, where he graduated in 2001. His senior year was nothing short of remarkable, winning the MVP award and being recognized as the Sacramento Bee's area player of the year. With a batting average of .445 and not a single strikeout, he left an indelible mark.
After high school, Pedroia received a scholarship to Arizona State University, where he excelled as a Sun Devil. Over three seasons, he maintained an impressive batting average of .347 or higher, with a career average of .384. He started all 185 games, showcasing his talent and dedication.
His professional career took off when he was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in 2004. Pedroia spent three seasons in the minor leagues, working his way up, before making a brief debut in 2006. The following year, 2007, marked a breakthrough as he won the American League Rookie of the Year Award and his first World Series title with the Red Sox.
But here's where it gets controversial... Pedroia's 2008 season was nothing short of extraordinary. He was named the American League MVP, won the Silver Slugger award, and earned All-Star and Gold Glove honors. An incredible feat, right? Some might argue that this was the peak of his career, but Pedroia's journey had more chapters to write.
During the remainder of his career, Pedroia continued to shine. He earned All-Star nods in 2009, 2010, and 2013, and added three more Gold Gloves to his collection in 2011, 2013, and 2014. He also celebrated another World Series victory in 2013 and was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame in 2022.
In 2021, Pedroia's hometown of Woodland honored him for his "profound accomplishments and inspiring commitment to excellence." The Woodland City Council wished him well in his retirement from professional baseball.
And this is the part most people miss... Pedroia isn't the only superstar in this induction class. Stan Hack and Ricky Jordan are multiple-time MLB All-Stars, Mike Burton is an Olympic Gold Medalist swimmer, and Jim Breech is an NFL record-setting kicker. Together, these five athletes will bring the total number of Sacramento Sports Hall of Fame inductees to 50!
The Sacramento Sports Hall of Fame has seen record-breaking participation from local sports fans. Over 20,000 votes were cast during the open voting period last November, showcasing the passion and engagement of the community.

The Sacramento Sports Hall of Fame continues its partnership with Special Olympics Northern California, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting their programs.
