Europe's Religious Landscape is Shifting Dramatically, and Christianity is Losing Ground!
The once deeply religious continent of Europe is undergoing a profound transformation, with significant shifts in how its population identifies with faith. Data from the esteemed Pew Research Centre paints a vivid picture of a continent where traditional religious adherence is waning, particularly among Christians.
Let's set the stage: in 2020, Europe was home to approximately 753 million people. At that time, the religious makeup was roughly two-thirds Christian (67%), a quarter religiously unaffiliated (25%), and 6% Muslim. These numbers, however, only tell part of the story.
But here's where it gets controversial... While Christianity has seen global growth, its footprint in Europe has actually shrunk. Between 2010 and 2020, the proportion of Europeans identifying as Christian dropped from a substantial 74% to 67%. As Conrad Hackett, a senior demographer at the Pew Research Centre, explained, "About two out of three people in Europe still identify as Christian. But back in 2010, it was three out of four people." This represents a noticeable decline.
And this is the part most people miss... Two prominent European nations, France and the United Kingdom, have now lost their Christian religious majorities. The primary driver behind this trend, according to the study, is religious disaffection – people simply choosing to step away from organized religion. Even the Jewish population has seen a decline, with an 8% drop over the past decade.
So, who's on the rise? Three groups are experiencing notable growth in absolute numbers. Leading the pack are the religiously unaffiliated, who saw a remarkable 37% increase in just ten years. They outpace the growth of Hindus (30%) and Muslims (15%). It's worth noting that while Hindus represent a smaller portion of the population (0.3% in 2020), their growth is still significant.
The surge in atheists and secularists appears to be directly linked to the decline in Christian identification. Hackett elaborates, "The biggest change in Europe was due to religious switching, people no longer identifying with the religion in which they were brought up. And again, most of that change was people coming from a Christian background and telling us when they were interviewed recently that they no longer identify with any religion."
Regarding the Muslim population, while it has grown by 15.9% in absolute terms over the last decade, its overall share of the European population has increased by just under one percentage point. This indicates a more gradual, albeit steady, expansion.
Diverse Dynamics Regarding Median Age
Europe is also characterized by an aging population, and this is reflected in religious demographics. Jews and Christians tend to be older, with median ages of 52 and 45, respectively. In stark contrast, Muslims represent the youngest religious group, with a median age of 34. Those with no religious affiliation fall in between, with a median age of 39. This means that, on average, Muslims and the unaffiliated are younger than Christians and Jews.
It's important to acknowledge that these Pew Research Centre findings are compiled from censuses and surveys, and methodologies can vary. As Hackett pointed out, "In every country in Europe, there are differences. Some countries do measure religion in their census, many do not."
