Amid a surge in flu cases, two hospitals are implementing a face mask mandate. Salisbury District and Great Western Hospitals in Wiltshire are urging all patients, visitors, and staff in their A&E departments and several assessment units to wear face coverings. The Great Western Hospital reports a 63% increase in flu hospitalizations over the past week, with further rises anticipated. NHS data reveals an average of 1,700 flu patients in English hospitals last week, a 50% jump from the previous year. Health experts warn of a more aggressive strain of the virus this year. While the hospitals specifically requested masks in A&E and assessment areas, they also strongly recommended face coverings in other clinical zones. Salisbury District Hospital characterized the measure as a temporary, risk-based precaution to safeguard patients, staff, and services. The hospital also advised visitors to wash their hands regularly and avoid hospital visits if unwell. Luisa Goddard, chief nurse at Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, strongly advocated for flu vaccination. She emphasized that flu is not a mere cold, but can lead to severe illness, straining patients and services during winter. Goddard urged everyone eligible to get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.
