Pixel users can now record phone calls directly within the Google Phone app, expanding beyond regional limits that existed until recently. Google had previously restricted native recording to certain areas, but as of November, the feature is available in more countries worldwide. This means you don’t need third-party apps to capture your calls anymore.
The built-in recording option serves as a basic alternative to Call Notes, which is an AI-powered recording and summarization feature available on newer devices like the Pixel 9 and newer models. After its September announcement, the feature has begun rolling out globally, and here’s everything you need to know—from availability and settings to how to use it.
What you need to use Pixel call recording
Google’s basic call recording in the Google Phone app was previously limited by location, likely due to varied laws governing call recording. Now, the feature is widely available, but you’re responsible for using it legally and ethically.
Google cautions users: “It’s up to you to follow all laws on recording phone conversations. Use call recording responsibly and turn it on only when needed.”
To enable recording, you must have a Pixel 6 or newer with Android 14 or later, and you should ensure the Google Phone app is updated to the latest version. Availability can still vary by country or region, even though the feature is broadly accessible.
Once enabled, you can record individual calls or set automatic recording rules for specific scenarios.
How to enable and configure Pixel call recording
1) Open the Google Phone app and access the menu (hamburger icon).
2) Go to Settings.
3) Toggle Call Recording to on.
4) Optionally choose an auto-delete preference for recordings.
5) Optionally enable Automatic recording for calls from non-contacts or for particular numbers.
After configuring preferences, you can start recording calls. If you’ve set up automatic rules, recordings will begin automatically when conditions are met (for example, when answering a call from an unknown number). Otherwise, you’ll need to start recording manually:
1) During a call, tap the Turn on button in the Call Recording box.
2) Tap Record to begin; an audio notification will indicate that recording is in progress.
3) When you’re finished, select Stop in the Call Assist area or simply end the call.
Your recording is saved to the Google Phone app. To access, listen to, share, or delete:
1) Open the Google Phone app and go to the Home tab.
2) Locate your recording in the history and tap it.
3) Use Play, Share, or Delete as needed.
4) To erase all recordings at once, go to Google Phone > Settings > Call recording > Delete all recordings now, then confirm.
5) If you prefer to remove a single recording, choose Delete once more to confirm.

Call recording is a practical tool for keeping records of important conversations with businesses or details you’ll want to revisit. It sits under the Call Assist umbrella and builds on the Call Notes framework. While Call Notes is limited to newer Pixel models, the basic recording feature is more broadly available.
