NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. - Jimmy Blewett's life took an unexpected turn last year, but he's not just thankful to be back racing; he's grateful for the second chance at life itself.
"It's a blessing to be here," Blewett shared, reflecting on his journey. "I'm thankful for my family, for the support I received, and for the opportunity to race again."
But here's where it gets controversial... Blewett's health scare began with diverticulitis, an inflammation in the digestive tract. What should have been a routine procedure turned into a near-death experience, leaving Blewett with a new perspective on life and racing.
"I realized that life can change in an instant," he explained. "It's a reminder to cherish every moment."
The Road to Recovery: A Surgical Journey
Blewett's health issues started with a small infection in his lower intestines, which went unnoticed for over a year. It was during a trip to North Wilkesboro Speedway that the pain and fever finally revealed the problem.
"I knew something was wrong when the pain hit me," Blewett recalled. "It was a wake-up call."
After diagnosis and initial treatment, Blewett faced a series of surgical procedures. The first surgery seemed successful, but complications arose when Blewett developed a leak, leading to a life-threatening situation.
"I almost lost my life," he shared candidly. "It was a tough battle, but I'm here today."
Motivation and Mentorship: A Family Affair
During his recovery, Blewett found inspiration in an unlikely source: Tommy Baldwin Jr., the Modified Tour team owner who battled cancer. Baldwin's resilience motivated Blewett to keep fighting.
"He showed me that no matter the challenge, a positive attitude is key," Blewett said. "I'm grateful for his support."
As Blewett healed, he focused on mentoring his son, James, ensuring a balanced approach to racing. Blewett and his wife, Katie, want James to experience life beyond the track, finding a healthy balance between racing and enjoying other pursuits.
"We want James to have a well-rounded life," Blewett explained. "Racing is a big part of our family, but it's not everything."
A Racing Comeback: Making Every Moment Count
Now, at 45, Blewett is back on the track, racing the No. 2 Gershow Motorsports Modified. He plans to enter four to six Tour races this year and hopes to guide his son's first Tour start.
"I'm excited to be back," Blewett said. "Racing is my therapy. It's a way to connect with my family and make lasting memories."
As Blewett continues his racing journey, he carries with him the lessons learned from his health scare. Every lap, every moment with his family, is cherished.
"I'm grateful for this second chance," he concluded. "Racing is my passion, and I plan to make every moment count."
