Measles Outbreaks: A Battle for Elimination in the Americas
In a critical step towards maintaining public health, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has called for a virtual meeting on April 13th, 2026, to address the recent measles outbreaks in the United States and Mexico. This meeting, organized by PAHO's Regional Monitoring and Re-Verification Commission for Measles, Rubella, and Congenital Rubella Syndrome (RVC), aims to review the elimination status of these diseases in both countries.
The timing of this meeting is significant, as it follows the emergence of measles outbreaks in the United States and Mexico, starting in January and February 2025, respectively. Under the Regional Framework for Sustainability and Reverification, the Commission meets annually, but this extraordinary meeting highlights the urgency of the situation.
The Challenge of Elimination
The RVC, an independent technical body reporting directly to PAHO's Director, has a crucial mandate. It is tasked with monitoring and verifying the elimination of measles, rubella, and Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS) across PAHO Member States. This involves assessing whether endemic transmission has reestablished, defined as an uninterrupted chain of measles virus transmission of the same genotype and lineage for 12 months or more within a specific geographical area.
To make an informed decision, the Commission will review comprehensive reports prepared by national health authorities and sustainability committees. These reports will include detailed epidemiological and laboratory evidence, providing a comprehensive overview of the situation.
A Collaborative Effort
