Nigeria's legal battle against DR Congo in the 2026 World Cup Playoffs has sparked intense debate. Shehu Dikko, chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), believes their case is strong and justified.
A Fight for Fair Play
Nigeria has officially requested that FIFA disqualify DR Congo from the World Cup qualifiers due to alleged rule violations. The issue revolves around DR Congo fielding players who may have previously represented another country, a move that goes against FIFA's regulations on player eligibility.
But here's where it gets controversial...
According to Dikko, "Our case is very tight. We're not sore losers; this is simply about upholding the law." He further explained that there are suspicions that DR Congo may have misrepresented their position to FIFA, obtaining clearances for players that should not have been granted.
And this is the part most people miss...
Just days ago, FIFA ruled against Malaysia in a similar scenario. Malaysia was found to have illegally procured player passports, resulting in the forfeiture of all matches played with those players.
So, is Nigeria's case as "tight" as Dikko claims? Or is this a matter of sour grapes?
