A long-awaited milestone is finally within reach for Northumberland's transportation network! The Northumberland Park station, part of the revived railway line, has an official opening date set for February 22nd.
This news comes after a significant delay, with the original plan to resume passenger services on the Northumberland Line between Ashington and Newcastle in December 2024. While the line has been operational for some time, two stations, Bedlington and Northumberland Park, remained incomplete.
But here's where it gets controversial... The delayed opening of Bedlington, which is expected to follow shortly after Northumberland Park, has been attributed to aging infrastructure and a water pipe issue under the car park. This caused quite a stir among local residents, who felt their town was being unfairly neglected.
However, there's a silver lining! An additional £37.9 million injection in August has ensured that the project will be completed, and the station will finally open its doors to passengers. Blyth and Ashington MP Ian Lavery assures us that "it will be great for the town."
And this is the part most people miss... The attention now turns to extending the line further up to Newbiggin. Conservative council leader Glen Sanderson believes that with the right ambition and funding, this extension could be a reality within the next five years.
"We're hoping for a generous investment from North East Mayor Kim McGuinness to make this happen," Sanderson said. "Northumberland deserves a robust transportation network that reaches its heart."
