Todd and Angela James, with heavy hearts, walked towards the beach where their beloved daughter, Piper, was found. In a moment of profound grief, they knelt at the very spot, longing for a connection with their 19-year-old.

On a backpacking trip from Canada, Piper's last moments are shrouded in mystery. She was last seen alive early one morning, heading to the beach to watch the sunrise, a routine she cherished.
Two men driving along the beach later spotted a pack of dingoes surrounding an object, which turned out to be Piper's body. The Queensland coroner's preliminary assessment suggests dingo bites and drowning as possible causes, leaving Todd and Angela with more questions than answers.
"We're desperate for closure," Angela said, "but we're told it might take months, and we may never get the answers we seek."
Todd, wanting to ensure no stone was left unturned, even inquired about a rape exam, but the official's response left him unsatisfied.
"As a father, I needed to know they were exploring every angle," he explained.
The couple's grief journey took them to K'gari, where they met with the traditional owners and participated in a smoking ceremony. Initially disappointed by the ceremony's location, they insisted on moving it to where Piper was found, seeking solace in the words of the elder, Kate Doolan.
"Her words were so personal, they soothed our grief," Angela revealed.
And this is the part most people miss... a lone dingo walked through the ceremony, leaving Todd with conflicting emotions.
"I love animals, but seeing that dingo... it hurt," he shared.
Todd and Angela believe Piper's death could have been prevented and are calling for reform in visitor education and dingo management on the island.
"We need to make it safer," Todd emphasized.
The couple met with rangers and learned of a heightened dingo activity alert that neither Piper nor the campsite owners were aware of. They're seeking legal representation to ensure the government doesn't sweep this under the rug due to upcoming events like the Olympics.
"Let's not hide it; let's make a change," Todd urged.
The campsite where Piper stayed left a profound impact on the couple. Todd even wanted to sleep where Piper had, imagining waking up together and walking to the beach.
The morning after the ceremony, a group walked to the beach, retracing Piper's steps. The rising sun on a clear morning brought them closer to their daughter.
"It was magical," Todd said, his voice filled with emotion.
Piper's adventurous spirit and love for Australia, inspired by the teen drama H2O, led her to work as a firefighter to save for her trip. Her parents' farewell at the airport was filled with love and a hint of worry.
"I wanted her back, safe at home," Todd admitted.
Now, as they return home with Piper's ashes, Todd and Angela plan a celebration of her life, hoping it will be a true celebration, not a sad affair.
"I want her to see people dancing, happy, celebrating her life," Todd shared.
