Salmonella Outbreak: 600 Sickened by Pork Scratchings (2026)

Imagine the shock of nearly 600 people falling ill after enjoying a beloved snack—pork scratchings. This alarming situation arose from a salmonella outbreak linked to products made by Tayto Group Ltd, leading to significant legal consequences for the company. On January 23, 2026, it was reported that the firm faced prosecution after the outbreak connected to its factory located in Westhoughton, Bolton, specifically involving their brand, Mr Porky pork scratchings.

This incident affected individuals across the UK, with confirmed cases emerging from regions such as the North West, South East, Wales, West Midlands, South West, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. Those who fell ill reported distressing symptoms including diarrhea, stomach cramps, and vomiting. During proceedings at Bolton Crown Court, a particularly troubling account emerged of a woman from Hampshire who required hospitalization due to severe symptoms, enduring her illness for three months after first seeking help.

Another troubling case involved a man from Leicester, who experienced illness for an entire week, suffering from similar gastrointestinal issues. In total, 35 individuals sought hospital care, with 12 requiring admission for treatment.

What makes this case particularly noteworthy is that it marks one of the first prosecutions in the UK that utilized genome sequencing—a technology employed to trace the source of foodborne illnesses. Additionally, the court noted that this situation involved what was described as one of the largest product recalls ever managed by UK authorities.

Tayto Group Ltd, which is a family-run business employing around 1,500 individuals, pleaded guilty to two serious offenses: placing unsafe food on the market and failing to safeguard food against contamination. The violations occurred between July and August 2021, although the effects lingered beyond this timeframe. Richard Barraclough KC, representing the prosecution, outlined that multiple deficiencies had built up over time within the factory's operations.

Investigations revealed that the outbreak stemmed from various internal issues at the factory, including inadequate separation between raw and cooked meat storage areas. In response to the crisis, the Food Standards Agency issued a recall notice in August 2021.

Barraclough highlighted the extensive efforts the company has since undertaken to rectify these issues, noting a high level of cooperation from Tayto Group. Defense attorney Jonathan Goulding expressed that his client sincerely apologizes for the distress caused by these offenses, acknowledging that they fell short of their typically high standards. He shared that three senior members of the company were present during the court proceedings, demonstrating their seriousness regarding the matter.

Goulding articulated the company’s shock at the incident, mentioning that they have invested over £800,000 on improvements and corrective measures at the factory. Furthermore, he stated that Tayto Group has achieved the highest safety accreditations for its Bolton plant and other locations.

Judge Abigail Hudson acknowledged that, at the time of the outbreak, the company had no reason to suspect the causes of the contamination, noting that the layout of the factory had been inherited from a previous owner and had received approval from Bolton Council. She also recognized that the company took immediate action by halting production upon discovering the outbreak and executing a thorough cleaning of the facility, while conceding the presence of the identified defects to environmental health officers.

In light of these findings, Judge Hudson imposed a fine of £153,000 on Tayto Group Ltd, in addition to requiring them to cover costs amounting to £309,136.09. This case serves as a crucial reminder about food safety and the importance of rigorous quality control in food production.
