With just two days until pitchers and catchers report for spring training, General Manager Brian Cashman made a strategic move by acquiring Schuemann from the Athletics in exchange for Dominican minor-league pitcher Luis Burgos.
Schuemann, a 28-year-old infielder/outfielder, may not be a power hitter, but he brings valuable speed, exceptional defensive skills, and decent right-handed power. Last season, he appeared in 101 games, hitting .197 with two home runs, 13 RBIs, seven stolen bases, and a 568 OPS. Schuemann's versatility is evident in his playing time, as he made starts at second base, shortstop, third base, left field, and center field.
Baseball Savant's Outs Above Average analytics ranked Schuemann's overall performance as plus-eight, tying for 29th among 256 qualifying players. His defensive contributions were particularly impressive, with a plus-five rating at second base and a plus-four rating at third base. At the major league level, Schuemann has a .212 batting average, nine home runs, 47 RBIs, 21 stolen bases, 154 strikeouts, and a .603 OPS in 579 at-bats.
The Yankees are confident in Schuemann's ability to compete for an Opening Day roster spot, especially with the recent injury to Oswaldo Cabrera, who suffered a season-ending fractured left ankle. Additionally, Jose Caballero and Amed Rosario, both versatile infielders/outfielders, are expected to secure season-opening roster spots if they remain healthy. Caballero will likely start the season as the Yankees' shortstop, as Anthony Volpe undergoes offseason surgery on his left labrum and will be sidelined until May.
To accommodate Schuemann's addition, the Yankees designated outfielder Yanquiel Fernandez for assignment and created a 40-man roster spot. They also outrighted right-hander Don Hamel and infielder Braden Shewmake from their 40-man roster, inviting both players to big-league spring training. Meanwhile, Burgos, a 20-year-old pitcher, has a 4-4 record, 3.39 ERA, 71 strikeouts, and 42 walks in 25 games over two minor-league seasons.
